Gartner predicts that by 2020, 75% of application purchases supporting digital business will be “build,” not “buy” . The ability to deliver software is therefore no longer a differentiator, but instead a basic need for survival.
In order to compete in this new era, an approach is required that enables fast time to market – the new differentiator – while maintaining stability, availability, and durability. The new type of ‘cloud native’ applications provide these characteristics when deployed on cloud native platforms such as Pivotal Cloud Foundry.
To deliver the speed, safety and scalability required today, applications should be designed accordingly. A micro services based architecture employing API based collaboration allows a modular, business capability oriented development approach. Designing applications to be ‘12 factor apps’, and using containers as deployment artifact allows frictionless deployment on a self-service platform.
Self-service platforms such as Pivotal Cloud Foundry enable development teams to operate at an application and service abstraction level via dynamic routing and load balancing, auto-scaling, and health management.
This platform itself, connections to legacy applications (e.g.: SQL databases), the virtualized infrastructure and the software defined datacenter it’s hosted on requires operational support from a platform operations team.
Technology can help, but technology alone is not enough. It’s essential to make cultural and organizational changes as well. To push value to market quickly, the barriers between the traditional worlds of Operations and Development need to come down (DevOps) in order to set up a Continuous Delivery practice and cross-functional product (instead of project) teams.

According to Gartner, “build” does not include out-of-the-box solutions, but instead is a combination of application components that are differentiated, innovative and not standard software or software with professional services (for customization and integration requirements), or solutions that are increasingly sourced from startups, disrupters or specialized local providers.
